Cover: Mark Alfred Carleton (1866–1925) was the key founding member and first president of the American Society of Agronomy. The American Society of Agronomy was formed in 1907 through his vision, enthusiasm, and leadership for the newly identified field of agronomy, the purpose being to “increase dissemination of knowledge of soils and crops, and the conditions affecting them.” As a USDA scientist, Mark Carleton greatly influenced U.S. agriculture by introducing hard red and durum wheat germplasms to the North American Great Plains and identifying the physiological races of wheat rust. We recognize his incalculable scientific and leadership contributions on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the American Society of Agronomy.
