In the Jan.–Feb. 2004 issue of Agronomy Journal (AJ) a "Call for Special Papers for the Centennial Volume of the Agronomy Journal" was published (Agron. J. 96:321) inviting our readers to submit topics for consideration to be published in 2008 as part of the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the journal. In response to this call for special papers, several proposals were submitted. This supplement to Agronomy Journal is the result of the call for special papers.Procedures and various deadlines were described in the call for special papers, one of which was for authors to submit their manuscript proposals to the Editorial Board by 1 July 2004. Following review and consideration by the AJ Editorial Board most of the proposals were approved for preparation and submission. Articles were to be prepared and submitted by 1 Jan. 2007 to allow sufficient time for review, approval, and revision of manuscripts. A few articles were reviewed and published during 2007 because they complemented the centennial celebration of the American Society of Agronomy, which occurred during 2007.
There is a diversity of interesting and informative articles contained in the supplement. We sincerely thank the authors for preparing these wonderful articles and for the contribution these articles are to our AJ centennial activities. The authors put a lot of hard work into their papers. The authors were very motivated, maybe even compelled, to prepare manuscripts on their selected topics. As they prepared their manuscripts several authors told me they became engrossed in working on their special paper. As you read these articles you will have the opportunity to reflect on the profession of agronomy, and I fully expect you will find inspiration and motivation that may stir you.
My thanks to Headquarters staff for their assistance in the preparation of the supplement and for their help in making our AJ centennial activities so successful.
