Fig. 1. The Charcoal Vision: A national system of distributed pyrolyzers for processing biomass into bio-oil and charcoal, with the bio-oil displacing fossil fuel and the charcoal being returned to the soil, could reduce U.S. demand for fossil oil by 25%, reduce U.S. C emissions by 10%, enhance soil and water quality, increase agricultural productivity, and strengthen rural economies. Extrapolated to a global scale this strategy could make a major contribution to world energy supply and the solution to global warming.
