Variations in Protein Levels in Grain Sorghum Grown in the Southwest Desert

George F. Worker, Jr. and Joseph Ruckman2

Crude protein content of grain sorghum was determined in six varieties and 35 hybrids grown in the southwestern desert area of the United States. These samples represent production from April and July plantings during the period 1961 through 1966. Average protein content of grain produced from April plantings was 10.12% as compared with 14.82% from July plantings. The protein content of all cultivars was higher from July plantings than from April plantings and also vary more from year to year. Variations ranged from 8.54% to 21.53% crude protein, depending on cultivar, year, and planting date. Protein levels showed a high degree of positive correlation with seed size and air temperature and a negative relationship with yield.

Key Words: yield • seed size • temperature
