Nitrate accumulation in tobacco leaves was studied in relation to the N, P, and K concentrations of the leaf. The leaves used in the study were from a 3-year N, P, K fertility trial and possessed wide variations in concentrations of N, P, and K. The importance of the N concentration as well as the unimportance of P and K on nitrate accumulation were shown. Nitrate N and total N contents of the leaves correlated at a highly significant level.
About 60% of the variation in the nitrate N content of the tobacco leaves was accounted for by the amount of N, P, and K added as fertilizer. The amount of added N was the major contributing factor in the correlation.
