The presence of nitrogen dioxide, a dangerously poisonous gas sometimes given off in silage fermentation, can be detected by exposure of moistened potassium-iodide-starch test papers to the air in the silo, silo-chute or area. The test paper turns from white to bluish black almost instantly in nitrogen dioxide of moderate concentration and more slowly in very low concentration.
