Nitrate Content of Fall-Sown Rye, Wheat, and Oat Forages1

The objective of this study was to compare the nitrate accumulation in the fall forage of oats, wheat, and rye at five rates of nitrogen fertilization. Rye accumulated the highest amount of nitrate nitrogen with lesser amounts for wheat and oats. In general, the nitrate content of rye, wheat, and oat forage increased with increased rates of nitrogen. The first cuttings contained the highest amount of nitrate nitrogen and may have conmined sufficient nitrate to present problems to livestock in grazing the forage. The later cuttings and regrowth cuttings were lower in nitrate, with the exception of one date in which the cutting was done after an adverse weather period.
