Effect of Nitrogen Forms on the Absorption of Bromide by Sorghum1

T. T. Chao2

Pot experiments were conducted to determine the effect of nitrogen forms on the absorption of bromide added as NaBr by sorghum. Plants supplied with NH4-N absorbed a greater amount of bromide than those with NO3-N while plants with a combination of NH4-N and NO3-N (1:1 ratio) were intermediate. There was a linear relationship between the amount of bromide applied and that absorbed by sorghum. The recovery of bromide in plant tops amounted to two-thirds of the bromide applied. Soil fumigation with D-D coupled widi N-Serve effectively inhibited nitrification of NH4-N fertilizer applied to soil. Such technique may be useful in studies where the effect of NH4-N versus NOs-N on plant nutrition is to be compared.
