Effects of Air Movement and Syringing on the Microclimate of Bentgrass Turf1

D. Thomas Duff and James B. Beard2

Air movement of 4 mph reduced turf mat temperature a maximum of 13 F compared to that reached when air movement was restricted. A maximum difference of 10 F was observed at a two inch soil depth under the two air movement regimes. Relative humidity 3 inches above the grass was not influenced by air movement at 4 mph.

Temperature reduction resulting from syringing with 0.25 inch of water at 12 noon was small in both the mat and at the 2-inch soil depth. However, syringing prevented temperature from reaching the maximum which would have occurred had no water been applied.

1 Contribution from the Department of Crop Science, Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station, East Lansing, as Journal Article No. 3818. Supported in part by a grant from the Michigan Turfgrass Foundation.

2 Graduate Teaching Assistant and Assistant Professor, respectively, Department of Crop Science, Michigan State University.

Received for publication April 18, 1966.
