Winterhardiness of Orchardgrass and Crested Wheatgrass Clones in Relation to the Ability of Their Seeds to Germinate Against an Osmotic Stress1

Clee S. Cooper2

Populations of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) and crested wheatgrass (Agropyron desertorum) clones which differed in the ability of their seeds to germinate against an osmotic stress were established. Clones with wide germination differences were selected from these populations for winterhardiness evaluation during the winter of 1964–1965. Hardiness evaluation was made by measuring specific conductivity of solutions containing electrolytes exosmosed from crown tissue following artificial freezing. There was no evidence of a relationship, either positive or negative, between winterhardiness of clones and the ability of their seeds to germinate against an osmotic stress.
