Synopsis: Corn was grown in 6 environmental combinations in each of 2 years. Grain yield was related to emergence date and to total hours of daylight during the grain formation period. The correlation of ear components with yield and with themselves was drastically affected by environmental factors associated with season of growth and soil moisture. The variations in the numerical values due to environmental changes suggest that ear component analysis in a suboptimum environment is of little value for determining genetic inheritance.
