Alternate Three-Cutting Systems for Alfalfa1

S. T. Dexter2

Synopsis: A schedule of cutting 3 times in the bud stage before September 1 was compared with cutting twice in early bloom and once about November 1 with 10 varieties of alfalfa, in 3 sets of plots in 2 locations, over a period of 6 years in lower Michigan. In the locations where the growing season and distribution of rainfall made it difficult to obtain three good cuttings before September, the alternate system gave as good as or better yields and definitely better survival.

1 Contribution from Michigan State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Journal paper No. 3284.

2 Professor of Crop Science.
