Synopsis: N and P absorption by barley was maximum at soil temperatures near optimum for dry matter production. Optimum temperatures were 52 to 59° F. for a soil low in P, and slightly higher for a soil higher in NaHCO3-soluble P. Fertilizer P absorption was more dependent upon soil temperature than was the absorption of soil P. The relation between dry weights and percent P in plant tops varied with temperature. The "critical level" for P was lowest, and the efficiency of P utilization was highest at the 59° F. temperature.
