Effect of Row Spacing and Nitrogen Fertilizer on Production of Irrigated Russian Wildrye (Elymus junceus Fisch.). II. Relative Crown and Root Development1

Synopsis: Root development under 3-year-old plots of irrigated Russian wildrye differed when grown at 9- and 36-inch row spacings. Further study revealed a greater root weight per acre under rows 6 inches apart than under rows spaced 18 and 36 inches. Root concentration decreased with increased distance from the center of the row. Volume of roots increased with increasing N up to the 200-pound rate, followed by a decrease at the 400-pound rate.
