Influence of a Barley Companion Crop Upon Root Distribution of Alfalfa, Birdsfoot Trefoil, and Orchardgrass1

Clee S. Cooper and Hayden Ferguson2

Synopsis: Vertical and lateral root growth of all three species was reduced when they were established with a companion crop. The companion crop was most deleterious to root growth of birdsfoot trefoil. Barley was able to compete with forage seedlings for moisture and nutrients early in the establishment period due to rapid root growth. Soil moisture and temperature were lower under the barley crop. Mature barley intercepted 89% of the incident light in early morning and 22% at noon.
