Synopsis: Competitive relationships of six strains of Rhizobium japonicum with chlorosis-inducing strain 76 identified under essentially sterile conditions in greenhouse tests were confirmed in the more complex environment of a field soil containing few soybean nodulating bacteria. Thirteen of 299 strains evaluated for competitiveness had a competitive advantage over strain 76 in greenhouse tests. Six strains ranked for competitiveness with strain 76 had similar ranks when evaluated in all combinations with each other.
