Evaluation of Forage Crops by Chemical Analysis. A Critique1

J. T. Sullivan2

Synopsis: Methods for the analysis of forages are evaluated as to their suitability in predicting quality of forages, particularly as to their digestibility to ruminants. Some methods are partly satisfactory in rating forages within the same type but not in comparing grasses with legumes or mixtures. From the standpoint of the agronomist lignin and crude protein are good criteria of quality. It is also recommended that the moisture content of the standing crop be recorded.
