Crop Response to Calcium Polyphosphate Glass and Some of Its Degradation Products1

G. L. Terman and J. D. DeMent2

Synopsis: Calcium polyphosphate glass and certain reaction products of ammonia and partially hydrolyzed glass were less available for early growth of crops grown in greenhouse pots than concentrated superphosphate. Granular, partially hydrolyzed calcium polyphosphate (14 to 18% of its phosphorus water soluble) was as effective for oats as ammoniated concentrated superphosphate having a much higher proportion of watersoluble phosphorus.

1 Contribution from the Soils and Fertilizer Research Branch, Division of Agricultural Development, TVA, Wilson Dam, Ala. Experimental fertilizers compared in the various tests were prepared by the Division of Chemical Development, TVA. Appreciation is expressed to C. M. Hunt, B. N. Bradford, L. B. Clements, and C. H. Morgan for plant analyses and conduct of the greenhouse experiments.

2 Agronomists, TVA. The latter is now with Esso Research and Engineering Co., Linden, New Jersey.
