The Use of Field Maturity Data to Establish Optimum Harvest Period for Merion Kentucky Bluegrass Seed Production1

D. C. Sumner and K. E. Lindsey2

Synopsis: Present data illustrate the desirability of establishing field maturity standards upon which to base field readiness for seed harvest under California climatic conditions. Harvesting when 20 to 35% of the panicles are fully mature appears to be the range of field maturity at which maximum seed yields and minimum preharvest shatter losses occur.

1 Contribution from the Department of Agronomy, University of California, Davis. Project No. 1879. This work was supported by a USDA Research and Marketing Contract No. 12-14-100-1011 (34) on Forage Grass and Legume Seed Production Research.

2 Associate Specialist in the Experiment Station and Graduate Research Assistant, respectively. The authors are indebted to seed growers J. C. Jacobsen and D. I. Carroll for their cooperation.

Received for publication November 12, 1961.
