Soil Aeration and Plant Root Relations I. Theory1

E. R. Lemon2

Accepted for publication October 27, 1961.

Synopsis: This paper theoretically approaches the problem of adequacy of oxygen for normal root respiration in the soil environment. First to be considered is the root oxygen "demand" aspect of the problem. This is followed by considering the "supply" characteristics of the soil environment. It is theoretically shown that the two aspects of the problem are interdependent and cannot be divorced.
