Effectiveness of Inorganic Nitrogen as a Replacement for Legumes Grown in Association with Forage Grasses. I. Dry Matter Production and Botanical Composition1

Lark P. Carter and J. M. Scholl2

Accepted for publication October 4, 1961.

Synopsis: Yields of orchardgrass and bromegrass were increased significantly by each increment of nitrogen with 0, 30, 60, 120, and 240 pounds per acre rates. Orchardgrass tended to outyield bromegrass at higher N rates. Application of N to grass-legume mixtures resulted in increased yield of dry matter due to increased growth of the grass component.
