The Sulfur Status and Sulfur Supplying Power of Oregon Soils1

M. E. Harward, Tsun Tien Chao and S. C. Fang2

Synopsis: Levels of organic S in soils were found to range from < 100 to > 700 ppm. Correlation coefficients for relative yields of alfalfa were in the order: sulfur "A" values, % S in plant, and extractable S plus sulfate release on incubation. A sulfur "A" value of 20 pounds per acre and a plant content of 0.22% S represented levels above which little response occurred. S application may affect nitrogen relationships of alfalfa.
