Synopsis: Shoot growth was critically damaged when soil containers were placed in nitrogen at early stages of growth before roots became well established. Root growth essentially ceased when placed in the nitrogen atmosphere and there was a time lag in recovery when placed in a "normal" atmosphere. All species studied, cotton, sunflower, and green beans, showed similar results.
