Evaluation of Sodium 2, 3-Dichloroisobutyrate as a Selective Male Gametocide in Cotton1

J. B. Pate and E. N. Duncan2

Synopsis: FW-450 at several treatment levels caused male and female sterility with no marked selectivity for either gamete. At one level, 1.02 pounds per acre, gametocidal selectivity for the male gamete was indicated. Natural crossing percentages were increased in a series of varieties by treatment with FW-450. The results indicated that FW-450 at the rates used in these experiments is not suitable for use as a selective male gametocide in commercial production of hybrid cottonseed.
