Response of Orchardgrass, Dactylis glomerata L., to Nitrogen Fertilization and Time of Cutting1

J. M. Scholl, T. H. McIntosh and L. R. Frederick2

Synopsis: Yields of orchardgrass were increased significantly by NH4NO3 and NH3 in 1956 in southern Iowa. First cutting yields from NH3 were reduced because of applicator tillage effects under drouth conditions. Nitrogen carryover was significant. Plots first cut on May 10, 1957, produced lower yields than those cut for the first time on May 1, 20, or 30. Plots cut first time on May 30 yielded highest; nitrogen content was highest on those cut first May 1.
