Relationship Between Botanical Composition, Nitrogen Response, and Water Table Level on Wet Meadow Sod1

M. G. Klages and J. A. Asleson2

Synopsis: Controlled water level and nitrogen fertilizer treatments on native wet meadow sods grown in large drums greatly altered the botanical composition of these sods over a 3-year period. Changes in the botanical composition accounted for much of the effect of these treatments on yield. Treatments favoring sedges and forbs gave low yields, while treatments favoring grasses produced high yields.
