Effects of the Genes su1, su2, and du on Carbohydrates in Developing Maize Kernels1

James W. Cameron and Donald A. Cole, Jr.

Synopsis: The gene combinations su1 du and su1 su2, as contrasted to su1 alone, slowed the accumulation of starch in developing kernels on several inbred and hybrid backgrounds. Sugars and water-soluble polysaccharides were not always affected, but improved eating quality was often recognized. When earworrn had been present, the incidence of mold was increased on mature seed ears of all genotypes, but especially on ears of su1 su2.
