Metabolic Changes Induced in Alfalfa During Cold Hardening and Freezing1

C. R. Swanson and M. W. Adams2

Synopsis: Respiration during hardening of Arizona Chilean and Teton alfalfas was determined daily in plants subjected to 4 combinations of daylength and temperatures. Respiration increased in plants exposed to alternating temperatures regardless of daylength when measured at a constant 30° C. The same varieties, when frozen and thawed, showed higher respiration when previously hardened under alternating temperatures and short days, and the hardy variety Teton showed the greatest respiratory response to hardening.
