Some Relationships Between Climate and Yields of Corn and Wheat in Spink County, South Dakota, and Yields of Milo and Cotton at Big Spring, Texas1

W. C. Moldenhauer and F. C. Westin2

Synopsis: Temperature was a highly important factor in crop yields. In Spink county, the effect of June and July average maximum temperatures on wheat and corn yields, respectively, overshadowed the effects of rainfall for these two months. At Big Spring, temperature effects also overshadowed the effects of seasonal rainfall. An explanation for the overshadowing effect of temperature is that summer temperatures reflect preceding climatic conditions whereas precipitation does not.
