Synopsis: The character zebra leaf in alfalfa is dependent on a single tetrasomic gene with dominance at the duplex level. The tetrasomic duplex-dominant system differs rather markedly from the simplex-dominant system in the proportion of dominant plants in successive generations of inbreeding. This would be reflected in a different rate in the decline of hybrid vigor in inbreed generations.
