Residue Particle Size as a Factor in Nitrate Release from Legume Tops and Roots1

F. C. Stickler and L. R. Frederick2

Synopsis: Nitrate immobilization was generally less and nitrate release from leguminous residues was greater with large particles than with finely ground material. Variation in nitrate release was found due to species and plant part. Important treatment differences occurred early in decomposition.
