Cytological and Fertility Relationships of Medicago sativa, M. falcata, and M. gaetula1

Ernest W. Sprague2

Synopsis: Interspecific and tri-species of hybrids of three diploid Medicago species—sativa, falcata, and gaetula—displayed regular meiosis. The three species appeared to have chromosomes of the same gross morphology. Seed set was as high in the hybrids as it was in the parental species. From a cytological point of view these three species appear to be genetic variants of the same polymorphic species.
