Synopsis: It was predicted that a combination of family and individual selection for resistance to common leafspot in an alfalfa population would improve the mean score from 3.32 to 2.39. Actually, the new population resulting from intercrossing the selections measured 2.06. Additive genetic variance was virtually exhausted by one generation of selection.
