Defining Agricultural Seasons in the Middle Latitudes1

James E. Newman and Jen-Yu Wang2

Synopsis: This study classifies the annual timetable of climatic change into natural agricultural seasons. The classificational criterion used is based on the responses of various field crops to the distribution of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, within weekly periods.

1 The frequencies of weekly temperatures used in this paper have been published in the Research Report No. 2, "The Phyto-climate of Wisconsin," sponsored by the Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Wisconsin and the U. S. Weather Bureau under contract Cwb 9303. Purdue University Agr. Exp. Sta. Journal Paper No. 1389.

2 Assistant Professor of Agronomy and Agricultural Climatology, Purdue University, Lafayette, Ind., and Research Associate, Dept. of Meteorology, University of Wisconsin, Madison.
